Marilyn Monroe’s lips and Cheryl’s smoky eyes – most iconic beauty trends of all time

Superdrug recently polled 2000 women and have come up with the top 20 most iconic beauty trends and looking at the list, I totally agree and love… most of them! Why do these trends always come back around.. or stay around in the first place?

Simon Comins, Superdrug Buying Director, said:

“In recent history there have been some really iconic beauty trends.

“The fact that some trends have come and gone, and then come back again shows that beauty trends are a cyclical as fashion, and they have all been sported by the famous faces of the day.

“Many of the looks can take a certain amount of practising to perfect, getting liquid eyeliner in perfect wings or flicks can be tricky and applying false eyelashes does take a while to master, luckily today technology has helped create products that make it easier to create the looks.

“Over the last 50 years make-up and beauty products have changed and our range of products has grown hugely.”

I’m going to tell you some of my favourite products you can use to create the number one iconic trend….

Bright Red Lipstick!

Now this is a classic look which will never go out of fashion! Made famous by the stunning Marilyn Monroe and now often worn by Rita Ora. But which shade of red suits you?

As a simple guide I’d advise:

Fair Skin- Go for true reds, without orangey tones, I love:

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Rebellious Red

Medium Skin: Pinkish or Orangey tones look fab:

MAC’s Lady Danger Lipstick

Dark Skin: Darker reds, even purples:

Bobbi Brown’s Lip Colour in New Wine

If you haven’t before I’d recommend popping along to a make up counter to try and find the perfect shade for you! 🙂

How To: Daytime Smokey Eyes

It’s no secret how much I love a brown smokey eye with liquid eyeliner, however so many struggle with the precision eyeliner flick I’ve decided to show you a smudgy smokey look with a kohl pencil. This look can be worn for day or night and is sooo easy 🙂

First I use a primer on my lids, I am loving NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base for £19.50… your eye make up does not go anywhere with this stuff 😯 a.m.a.z.i.n.g! !! Of course there are cheaper alternatives out there like Rimmel’s Under Cover shadow primer for £4.99.

Next it’s time for a light coloured eyeshadow along the brow bone and a darker brown on the lids as a transition colour.

Now draw your eyeliner on with a kohl eyeliner pencil, this can be black or brown. (Tip: warm the tip of the pencil up by rubbing it on your hand before applying to the eye.. clean hands of course ;p). This line does not have to be neat as now it’s time to blend. Load a small eye shadow brush with an even darker shade of brown and smudge the eyeliner upwards, when the line isn’t prominent, use a blending brush to blend the eyeshadow and eyeliner together creating a smokey eye look. Don’t forget to pop a little under the eyes too!

Here are the colours I’ve used from my MAC Amber Times Nine Palette . You can obviously use any 3 colours however for a day look or the more mature skin I’d recommend a matte shadow. I absolutely love this palette, all of MAC’S eyeshadows are so pigmented they are fabulous!!!

Now it’s time for lashings of mascara… This one from Maxfactor is my favourite everyday one at the mo! Hope you have a go lovelies, What do you think of this look?

How To: Ombré Lips

According to Oxford Dictionaries ombré is defined as:

‘having tones of colour that shade into each other, graduating from light to dark.’
“a blue and white ombré silk shift”
French, past participle of ombrer ‘to shade’.
We’ve had Ombré Hair, Nails and now Lips! I’ve seen this trend all over Instagram and just had to try it myself, it’s so much more flattering than the traditional lined lips. The darker shades add definition and as the colour is blended out it creates the illusion of fuller lips. It was actually really hard to photograph and show the illusion as it really did just look as if the light was reflecting off, however the bigger the contrast between colours the more prominent the look is!
Step 1- Prep
If you have chapped lips I’d recommend buffing them before applying any lipstick for a flawless look! You can lightly scrub them with a toothbrush or use a lip scrub to brush off the dead skin, like Lush’s Bubblegum one here. Next it’s time to moisturise your lips, I’ve used good old Vaseline , a product EVERYONE should have in their make up kit or you could use a base like MAC’s PREP+PRIME LIPS  then with a light brush of powder, to really make the colour pop it’s time to get colourful!
Step 2- Lip Liner
When choosing the look you want I would recommend 2 versions of a similar colour however one dark shade and one light. For example Dark and Light Pink, Dark Green and Light Purple… not so much ;).
I start how I usually would line the lips traditionally, then I blend inwards with the pencil positioned on it’s side. Darker on the outside and minimal towards the middle of the lips.
With your finger, gently pat and smudge the colour closest to the inside of your lips to make the lines less harsh.
Step 3- Ombré Blend
I have chosen Maxfactors Lipstick in ‘Star Dust Pink’, using a lip brush I have blended the colour from the outside in trying not to get too much of the lip liner colour on the inner part of my lips.
So here you have it, I have rubbed my lips together once or twice and I haven’t, but you could finish off with a coat of clear Lipgloss and you’re done 🙂 This is quite a subtle version of the look but you can be as bold as you like.
Have you tried this look? Or will you now?

Outlet Bargains!

I just had to pop into Bicester Village Designer Outlet after discovering they have a cosmetics shop 😮 hello discounted designer Make Up. The shop was in quite a mess with testers I wouldn’t go near breeding germs, it’s nothing like going to a Make Up counter and they don’t have the latest best sellers, but if you dig around you can certainly get some good stuff at a discounted rate! Here’s what I bought…

Nightingale and Edge To Edge MAC lip pencils.
Outlet Price: £8.75

These colours are no longer available to buy online however there are similar alternatives. The colour ‘Beet’ is very close to ‘Nightingale’ and there are a few alike to ‘Edge To Edge’.

I’m a big fan of these pencils, you can wear them on their own for a matte look, with lipstick, MAC’S Lipglass or other lipglosses.

MAC Satin Lipstick- Rebel
RRP: £15.50
Outlet price: £10

This gorgeous colour is available online, I teamed mine up with the ‘Nightingale’ Pencil and it came out a gorgeous colour!

If you didn’t already know MAC’S lipsticks come in 9 different finishes for certain desired textures and looks, this colour has a Satin Finish, this lasted so long on my lips!!

MAC PRO Set Powder
RRP: £22.50
Outlet price: £14.50

This is one of MAC’S Pro products and I love it! It’s so light and sets foundation perfectly leaving a velvety matte look. I struggled to find a colour suitable for me as they don’t have the full range of shades, mostly they just have the least popular ones. But I’m happy with this and what a discount!!

PRO Palette Large/Single
Outlet price: £10.50

Now this palette I’m a bit annoyed about 🙈. On MAC’S Official Page It is actually advertised at £10!!!! Grrrr.

If you haven’t seen these before they are fab! You can buy inserts to pop inside the palettes and you can choose the colours you like, there’s ones for eyeshadow, powders, foundations or lipsticks, basically anything! These are a Make Up Artists best friend! They now have a clear lid so you can see your colours easily… High five!!!

Overall I’m really pleased with my cheeky discounted products this week, they also sell other designer brands such as NARS Smash box and Bobbi Brown. Here’s their website. If you’re after cheaper branded make up check this store out, remember there are so many fakes out there, these stores are the only places you will find products cheaper, be careful who you buy from and especially what’s out there on EBAY!

Lots Of Love

Weekly Beauty Picks #1

My top beauty picks at the moment are these lovely products, Schwarzkopf (wow that’s hard to spell) Essence Ultime Omega Repair Shampoo, with a picture of Claudia Schiffer’s face on it and MAC’S tinted Lipglass, in the colour C-THRU.

I’ve always been a bit of a fan of Schwarzkopf, I like the got2b range and when I used to colour my hair myself I’d only ever us LIVE XXL. So why do I love this shampoo so much? I don’t know what it is but when you rub it in to your hair it just feels lovely and when I’ve blow-dried it after using this range, it always feels so full of volume! It smells delicious too! According to the website it has a unique combination of pearl essence, panthenol, refined protein and keratin. One thing I found very interesting when looking at their website and don’t laugh at me if you think I should know this already but did you know pearls are the only gem created from a living organism? They come from a tiny grain of sand penetrating an oyster core and as a defence mechanism the oyster produces layers and layers of mother pearl… well every day’s a school day! They also do this shampoo in other ranges, there’s a blonde one which I’ve tried, but I still prefer how this one makes my hair look and feel! The shampoo is around £5 however often I’ve bought them on offer. The stockists according to the website are Asda, Waitrose and Superdrug, I’m sure I’ve bought it from Tesco before but that is what the website says!

Ooh and I just love Claudia’s top tip on the back of the bottle…. I’m confused… is that a tip?

If you want to find out more about the range, check the website out below.

So… favourite product number 2! We all know what a big fan I am of MAC products and here’s one of favourites at the mo! MAC lipglass’s are loveeeeely! They smell absolutely delicious and feel so lush on your lips. There’s quite a range of colour’s they come in… I want them all! Currently my fav is pictured above (C-THRU) I love a nude lip! You can wear them over lip pencil, lipstick or just on their own, I would make sure your lips are primed before you pop it on for a perfectly smooth look. It lasts a fair time and is really pigmented and contains Jojoba Oil which helps soften and condition your lips. On MAC’s official website the cost is £14.50, you can also buy the product at various MAC stores and make up counters in department stores and airports! Here’s a pic of me wearing C-THRU

Here’s a few of my new purchases too
